Dearest Sarai…

May 24th, 2013 - It’s incredible to me that it has already been a full year.

A full year since I cried on the phone as your grandma told me I was officially an aunt. A full year since you blessed us with your existence. Your presence in my life is indescribable, but if I had to put it into words, I’d say: I am amazed. I am amazed at the fact that you have more personality than most adults I know. I am amazed at how you light up an entire room. I am amazed at how much love can live in such a small person.

In just a year, you’ve broken walls and strengthened bonds. You’ve illuminated the hearts and lives of people who thought they had nothing to live for. You’ve created an alluring universe around you — one that has shown me things about love and life that can only be taught by angels.

As your godmother, I promise to be an endlessly shining example of love, balance, faith and virtue. As an aunt, I promise to be there when mami and papi won’t budge, to pluck your eyebrows for the first time, to hug you when you’ve done something amazing and understand a bad decision without judgement.

This is an ode to you, Sarai Marie Martinez.
Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

To many more fabulous birthdays…to much more love.
I adore you, Mimi. Love, Mimi.
